This week I'm waiting on...
Black Heart by Holly Black. (Link to Goodreads.)
What can I say? I just re-watched Rian Johnson's neo-noir Brick for the 234587098th time. I love the idea of a high school noir, and this series feels like my own special YA drug. (Check out my rave reviews of series predecessors White Cat and Red Glove if you don't believe me.)
Even better news? Rumor has it that Black Heart got a cover redesign from this, which I find frankly awful:
To this, which looks a little Beautiful Creatures but is a significant improvement:
Maybe that's just the Canadian cover? I'm not sure. (I got the news from this post on Midnight Bloom Reads.) Either way, it's still a far cry from the UK covers for this series, which are beyond beautiful:
Publishers, make the amazing happen on my US shelves. PRETTY PLEASE.
Anyway, check out the Goodreads summary for Black Heart:
Cassel Sharpe knows he’s been used as an assassin, but he’s trying to put all that behind him. He’s trying to be good, even though he grew up in a family of con artists and cheating comes as easily as breathing to him. He’s trying to do the right thing, even though the girl he loves is inextricably connected with crime. And he’s trying to convince himself that working for the Feds is smart, even though he’s been raised to believe the government is the enemy. Can you believe we have to wait till April???
But with a mother on the lam, the girl he loves about to take her place in the Mob, and new secrets coming to light, the line between what’s right and what’s wrong becomes increasingly blurred. When the Feds ask Cassel to do the one thing he said he would never do again, he needs to sort out what’s a con and what’s truth. In a dangerous game and with his life on the line, Cassel may have to make his biggest gamble yet—this time on love.

Thanks for linking back to me! I've been hearing such diverse reactions to the cover... some people really like the change, and others hate it. In any case, I'm sure I'll still be loving the book.
The cover isn't just for Canada... it's for the US too! I actually got the cover image straight from the Simon & Schuster US website. I just happened to know about the new cover because S&S Canada tweeted about it not long ago.
The whole trilogy is getting a new look. Holly Black said she was waiting until all 3 covers were ready before posting them all together. I'm looking forward to hearing her input!
Hey Maggie, can't wait for that book either. I'm alittle miffed by the cover change though now it won't match the other two I have.
Tristan @ Reads With Wreckless Abandon
Hmm. I think I like the original cover better. I read White Cat a few weeks ago and I really liked it I haven't read book2 yet though.
Giselle
Xpresso Reads
Hmm. I'm looking forward to Black Heart too, but if they change the cover from the one they had originally, it won't look like the rest of the books in the series. Maybe they can just...do something with that first one? lol
My WoW this week
I have yet to read this series, but it always intrigues me. I think it's something I'd really enjoy. Too bad my TBR list is eons long... Great pick!
Feel free to check out my YA WoW here.
Thanks for posting it, Liz! I'm sure my reactions are pretty clear. While I hate it when books in a series don't match, I like the new design much better. I'll be interested to see what the rest of the series looks like!
What the original covers have going for them is definitely a more noir look. The new covers have a paranormal romance-type feel to them. Either way, the book inside is sure to be fabulous, of course!
